Major League Baseball has extended Blue Jays closer Roberto Osuna’s administrative leave through June 25, marking the sixth time MLB has extended his leave since he was arrested earlier this year and charged with assaulting a woman.
Osuna was originally placed on administrative leave for seven days starting on May 8 and it was extended for another seven on May 14, May 21, then June 4, 11 and 18. He was scheduled to appear in court Monday, according to multiple reports.
The 23-year-old remains on the restricted list and continues to receive his $5.3 million salary, but is ineligible to play. However, administrative leave is not considered discipline.
I hate making mistakes, but I love making mistakes, I love having [missed assignments] and drops because it just reassures you and makes you get back on the grind and makes you lock in and focus a little more, Barkley said. Better to happen now in practice than in Week 1 against Jacksonville.
And in case he forgets that, his teammates won’t be afraid to remind him.
That’s perhaps why he isn’t sweating his latest setback, since he insists it is temporary.
Via Eliot Shorr-Parks of NJ.com, the Eagles cornerback spent his time on the sidelines during minicamp with what he would only call soreness.
He said it was unrelated to the torn Achilles that kept him out of all but one game last year. The injury was suffered in a pre-draft workout, and the Eagles took him in the second round anyway, amounting to a redshirt season.
Precaution, Jones said of the recent issue. [The team] doesn’t want me practicing right now. Just minor soreness.
Jones didn’t participate in the OTA session open to reporters last week either, but he said he was encouraged by the progress he’s made the last two months.
I feel really good. Coming back is a blessing. I feel really comfortable on the field, getting used to the defense, knowing the defense inside and out, he said. Getting comfortable with the defense because last year when I was playing I was practice squad going against then. But it is a good feeling to be in the defense and get the scheme.
Javier Baez, who left the Cubs’ game Sunday against the Cardinals with a bruised left elbow after being hit by a pitch, said Monday on 670 The Score radio in Chicago that I’m good but added that he may need Monday night off.
Javier Baez tells the guys his elbow is good. He did not get an x-ray. Says, I’m good, but admits he may need another day.
The 25-year-old infielder suffered the injury Sunday night when he was hit by a pitch from Cardinals starter Jack Flaherty in the third inning. Baez took a few steps from the plate before falling to the ground, and he remained down for several moments. He was then removed from the game.
Texans safety Andre Hal has been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
He received the preliminary diagnosis from team physician Dr. James Muntz at Houston Methodist Hospital, according to a team statement. He is undergoing further testing to assess treatment options.
Hodgkin’s Lymphoma is a cancer of the lymphatic system. It starts in the white blood cells, which regulate the body’s immune system.
Unless Irving wins his appeal, the first game he is eligible to play is October 7 at Houston.
Irving signed a one-year, $2.91 million tender as a restricted free agent.
He missed most of the team’s offseason program while attending to his off-field problems, including a custody battle with his ex-girlfriend, who made and recanted domestic violence claims.
I’ve been through a lot, Irving said Thursday. I’ve seen the light at the end of the tunnel. I got my daughter. It’s just me and her. That means it’s no stress really. Have a good relaxing day with the person that loves me the most, the person I love the most. It’s going to be good.
My faith in God and the support from my family, friends, teammates and coaches will see me through this difficult time, Hal said in a statement. I will not let this diagnosis stop me from fulfilling my dreams and I do not want anyone to feel sorry for me. I know how to beat this and I will beat it.
Head coach Bill O’Brien said the news hit the team hard.
At a time when free agent signings have slowed to a trickle, the Browns are still bolstering their defense.
Free agent linebacker Mychal Kendricks will sign a one-year deal to play the 2018 season in Cleveland, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports
He was dominant in the win over Lane, another ex-NFL player, showcasing immense power with a couple of heavy shots to cause the stoppage inside the first minute.
Mike Bohn of USA Today noted White hinted the 2013 Pro Bowl selection could still gain more experience before officially making the jump to the UFC.
Hardy played six seasons in the NFL. He spent five years with the Carolina Panthers, who selected him in the 2010 draft, and one with the Dallas Cowboys in 2015.
In July 2014, he was found guilty on two counts related to domestic violence against a woman. The charges were dismissed on appeal in February 2015 after the accuser couldn’t be contacted for the jury trial.
Former All-Pro wide receiver Terrell Owens has publicly declined his invitation to attend the Aug. 4 Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrinement ceremony in Canton, Ohio. Owens made the announcement Thursday via an official statement.
The goal is to speed up the process. While the bill is expected to pass each house easily, the question has been how quickly Murphy will sign it.
Some were hoping he’d do so Friday to get betting going immediately. But his office said it plans to conduct a thorough review of the legislation.
Russell Beckham argues that the Bears violated his First Amendment rights by preventing him from walking the sidelines while wearing Packers colors during a pregame event for season-ticket holders in 2016. Beckham, who represents himself in the lawsuit, has survived a preliminary effort by the Bears to have the case thrown out of court.
To ultimately win, Beckham may need to show that the Chicago Park District, which owns and operates Soldier Field, had a role in the team’s decision to prevent Beckham from wearing Packers gear on the sidelines. Which means that NFL players may need to show that local stadium authorities had a role in the rule that requires players to stand for the anthem.
That’s also at odds with the views of U.S. voters, 51 percent of whom supported the policy with 42 percent in opposition.
Where the Warriors stack up if they win a third championship in four years will make for a dynasty debate. And their domination doesn’t appear to be ending anytime soon, so if they keep winning Golden State will have its place in history.
As a fan of the NBA, you could go down the list of the teams that won multiple years and just dominated the league for stretches of time, Curry said.
You look at it, they’ve got four Hall of Famers on their team in Klay, Dray, Steph and KD. They’ve got a Finals MVP that comes off their bench, James said in reference to Iguodala…. I don’t know where they will fall in my book, but they will have a nice chapter.
So as we wait for the dramatic outcome to the promise of a dramatic turn, let’s spend some time wondering what it may be. Geragos suggested that someone would be dropping a dime, which presumably would cause the NFL to drop a deuce. (Geragos actually said someone will dime out the NFL, but if I didn’t phrase it as dropping a dime it would have looked odd to use drop a deuce. And I never turn down a chance to use drop a deuce. And now I’ve been able to use drop a deuce three times. Actually, four.)
So if someone is going to be dropping a dime, it would have to be someone who knows what’s been going on. While discussing the Geragos claim during Thursday’s PFT Live, I wondered aloud whether the dime-dropper will be former NFL P.R. executive Joe Lockhart, who surely knows what was going regarding any potential coordination (collusion) between the league office and the teams in order to keep Kaepernick unemployed. With word emerging on Wednesday that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones had testified that he was proud to see Lockhart gone, maybe Lockhart decided to take the gloves off.
In sports, teams will trump individuals nearly every time. LeBron James knows this well.
Despite James averaging 35.6 points, 9 rebounds and 10.6 assists in the NBA Finals, his Cleveland Cavaliers are in a 0-3 hole to the Golden State Warriors.
Great teams, like the Patriots and Warriors, don’t beat themselves. Even on off days, their pedigree and attention to detail will win out over the course of 60-minute or 48-minute affairs.
No team has consistently overmatched opponents mentally as the Patriots have in the Tom Brady-Bill Belichick era. Sporting greatness on the field or court is one part of the equation (the Patriots have Brady and Rob Gronkowski, the Warriors Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson). Dominating preparation is another proven championship trait.
When teams have beaten the Patriots in Super Bowl s, like the New York Giants or Philadelphia Eagles, it took near-perfect efforts. Knowing the Patriots ‘ persona is why Doug Pederson knew he had to keep his foot on the gas in Super Bowl LII, which led to the memorable Philly Special touchdown.
Great teams don’t beat themselves and they make the margin for error minuscule. Even for a player of LeBron’s caliber, overcoming The Team is a daunting task.
No, he did something that he considered normal.
I hope anybody would have done that. But I don’t know, that’s just how I was raised, he said. You see somebody in distress, you just help them out, nothing more, nothing less. . . . I’m happy she made her flight more than anything. I’m not really a media guy.
Teammates were teasing him, and he would have rather talked about football than get attention for his good deed.
And with a little luck, we could live in a world where such gestures didn’t stand out in such sharp relief from what we’re surrounded by on social media.
While Cam Newton and new offensive coordinator Norv Turner feel each other out, Kuechly will be on the other side of the ball anchoring the whole ship, per usual. The linebacker led the Panthers with 125 tackles and was ranked by analytics site Pro Football Focus as the No. 1 linebacker against the run. Kuechly’s instincts at the position are unparalleled. He’s as important to the D as Newton is to the offense. Health willing (and the concussion concerns are frightening and legitimate), another year of elite play is coming.
Washington Nationals second baseman Daniel Murphy, who hasn’t played this season after offseason surgery on his right knee, could be close to returning to the lineup.
He rejoined the team Sunday, taking batting practice and fielding grounders.
I don’t think it’s anything serious, Kintzler said Sunday. Probably just some rest and some strengthening. I don’t know what the timetable is, but I’m sure it would be no more than 10 days whatever we need.
The team recalled right-hander pitchers Trevor Gott and Wander Suero from Triple-A Syracuse.
Gott returns to the Nationals for his third stint of the season. He has appeared in 17 games out of Washington’s bullpen, going 0-2 with a 5.28 ERA.
Suero has appeared in 12 games for the Nationals, with a 4.15 ERA.
But Cespedes was removed from a Double-A rehab game Saturday night after he experienced tightness in his injured right quad, potentially delaying his return to the majors. The Cuban slugger will be re-evaluated Sunday, the Mets announced.
After the Mets’ 2-0 win over the Yankees on Sunday, Conforto is batting just .215 with seven home runs this season and is mired in a 3-for-32 slump in his past 10 games. Despite being just nine months removed from surgery to repair a torn capsule in his left shoulder, Conforto told the Post that he feels healthy, strong, fine.
Triple-A is not an answer, Conforto told the Post. I’ve been through that. I have done all I can do down there. I play at this level — that’s it.
But the Mets, who lost eight straight games before Sunday’s win and 15 of their last 19, are looking to jump-start their struggling offense and believe that Conforto might have rushed back too soon from his injury. The Mets initially targeted early May for Conforto’s return to the majors, but the former All-Star instead made his season debut on April 5.
The numbers are hard to fathom. A .152 batting average and .232 slugging percentage, nine runs, 15 RBIs. How bad is Chris Davis? Historically bad.
Matt Kemp went 1-for-4 with an RBI single and leads the National League with a .351 average and .592 slugging percentage. (Muncy actually has a higher slugging percentage but doesn’t have enough plate appearances to qualify for the leaderboards.)
Slumping badly at the plate, the plummeting Mets had lost eight straight games and 15 of 18 going into Sunday night’s Subway Series finale against the New York Yankees.
In other injury-related news, Callaway said closer Jeurys Familia (sore shoulder) and infielder Wilmer Flores (sore lower back) are both headed to Florida, and the team is very optimistic that they will be activated off the DL during the upcoming road trip.Ross Stripling, Max Muncy, Matt Kemp give Dodgers unexpected lift
Colorado scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning on Ian Desmond’s two-run single that chased Zack Godley (6-5). Godley allowed two runs and five hits and struck out eight in 5 2/3 innings.
Arizona added three runs in the seventh. Goldschmidt tripled off Jerry Vasto to drive in two, and he scored on Marte’s double to left.
For us to add on was big, Goldschmidt said. A two-run ballgame, anything can happen.
Diamondbacks: C Jeff Mathis was placed on paternity leave and OF Christian Walker was recalled. … RHP Shelby Miller (Tommy John surgery) was scheduled to throw 85 to 90 pitches for Double-A Jackson on Sunday.
Rockies: OF Carlos Gonzalez (rib) has shown improvement and was available to pinch-hit on Sunday. He could return to the lineup Tuesday in Philadelphia. … RHP Adam Ottavino (left oblique strain) felt fine after a 20-pitch bullpen session Saturday. Thinks are pointing in the right direction, manager Bud Black said. … RHP Scott Oberg was put on the 10-day DL with a back strain, retroactive to Friday.
The market for Dez Bryant remains quiet almost seven weeks after the Dallas Cowboys released the receiver.
Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said NFL teams have asked him and Dallas coaches about Bryant, and he’s not sure why the wideout remains unsigned.
4. Michael Phelps, Olympics: Swimming is a sport that the overwhelming majority of sports fans care about for exactly one week every four years. And yet Phelps was so good, so dominant, so clearly better than anyone else in the pool that his appeal somehow transcends the remarkable reality of his 23 gold medals (28 overall).
5. Serena Williams, women’s tennis: She wasn’t always likable, or easy to root for, but she has those 23 Grand Slams (39 with doubles), has been No. 1 eight different times, and often has seemed like she was playing an entirely different sport than her contemporaries.
6. LeBron James, basketball: I stand by everything I wrote last week. And forgot to add this: He’s got at least 3-4 more elite years to solidify his status.
If Marshall had not signed, the Giants could have been on the hook for an injury settlement.
Marshall announced his new home on Instagram with a post of himself in a 12th Man shirt. The Seahawks fans — considered the loudest in the NFL — go by the 12th Man moniker.
Marshall is No. 16 in NFL history with 959 receptions and No. 23 with 12,215 yards. He is a six-time Pro Bowler but has never made the playoffs during his 12-year career with the Broncos, Dolphins, Bears, Jets and Giants.
In his one season with the Giants, Marshall produced just 18 catches for 154 yards in five games before suffering a season-ending ankle injury. The Giants opted not to replace him with a Pro Bowl-validated third receiver, rather going with Cody Latimer, Russell Shepard and a cast of others with much to prove.
The team tweeted Monday night that “DeAngelo Hall has not yet officially decided to retire despite reports.” It did not offer further explanation.
It simply could mean Hall has not officially submitted his retirement papers. Or maybe it means he’s reconsidering? But then, he’d have to find some team willing to give him a contract.
So it seems unlikely that Hall will attempt a “comeback.”
A report earlier Monday quoted Hall saying, “I’m done.” The defensive back added that he was weighing offers to join a front office or work in TV.
The Dallas Cowboys have to be encouraged that they fell just one victory short of the playoffs last year despite their best player suspended for 38 percent of the regular season.
The 2016 rushing champion is still only 22 years old, and it’s not as though his numbers took a nosedive. Elliott accumulated 857 yards from scrimmage in his final six games of the year, which was better than his pace from that monster rookie campaign.
The Saints have Sheldon Rankins, David Onyemata and Tyeler Davison back from last year and Bromley will likely be trying to earn a spot as a depth option behind them.
Frazier was in Tampa the entire time, and getting over the concussion was a mental grind, especially the setbacks, like when he practiced at night for the first time.
It was one of those injuries that the more frustrated I got, the more emotional I felt about it and the worse it could have made my symptoms because it was what was inside my head, Frazier said. “I was trying to make sure that everything I did was in a positive manner, even the music that I listened to and the movies that I watched and (TV) shows to try to get laughter because I was sitting in my apartment all day long.
I watched a lot of Friends. I watched a little bit of The Office, things to try to make me laugh. Mainly music was the thing. Any time there was a dull moment, I had music playing. The idiom was The Chainsmokers’ sound, something uplifting … mood boosters to try to maybe trick myself to think it’s going to be all right.
Finally, it’s all right again.
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott revealed a lofty goal for his career Wednesday.
When Jon Machota of the Dallas News asked if he is feeling added pressure due to the possibility of a big contract in his future, Prescott said: “I want to be the best I can. I want to be the best quarterback that the Cowboys ever had. So when I go in each and every day, it’s just about being the best player I can be. All that stuff comes when you play the game well.”
After winning Offensive Rookie of the Year, being named to the Pro Bowl and leading the Cowboys to the playoffs in 2016, Prescott had some growing pains last season, as Dallas finished a somewhat disappointing 9-7.
Romo didn’t have the same playoff success as Aikman and Staubach, but he is Dallas’ all-time leader in passing yardage and passing touchdowns.
Prescott has the potential to near the status of those legendary signal-callers, and if he makes strides over the next two seasons, he is in line to be paid like one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL.
In the postseason, Sissons added five goals and 18 assists over 26 games.
Studenic, a 2017 fifth-round pick by the Devils, backed up his 48-point regular season with three goals and 12 assists over 24 OHL playoff games. The forward helped Hamilton knock off the Soo Greyhounds, who were the overwhelming favorite to win the OHL after going 55-7-3-3 in the regular season.
Here’s the full schedule for the 2018 Memorial Cup. The top team in the round-robin games will automatically advance to the final, while the second and third-place teams will play in the semifinal. All games will be played at Brandt Centre in Regina.
What is post time for the Preakness Stakes on Saturday? When is the Preakness Stakes on Saturday?
The Preakness Stakes, the second leg of the Triple Crown, will be run Saturday, May 19, 2018 (5/19/18) at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. Kentucky Derby winner Justify is the favorite, as expected, and drew the No. 7 post position.
